CV - Biography

Visual artist Athina Ioannou was born in Phaleron, Athens (GR) to Greek parents and she moved to Italy after high school. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and graduated from the Dusseldorf Academy of Fine Arts (MFA) with Janis Kounellis, David Rabinowich, Daniel Buren and Didier Vermeiren (Rectorat: Markus Lüpertz).

She has been working and living in Rome and Dusseldorf since 1997, while living and working in France, Paris since 2006 and Belgium, Brussels since 2008. Her work reflects her international orientation, as in the case of her first solo exhibition in Mexico City and her latest work at the Tenjin business Center in Fukuoka, Japan; an artwork production for the new building designed by the world acclaimed architect REM Koolhaas New York office, in collaboration with Tokyo-based Art Front Gallery and the Hilario Galguera gallery in Mexico.

Athina Ioannou, was in 2020 a member of the Election Committee for postgraduate (MFA) students. Invited by Guy Masseaux (Prof. Holder AEsP) [art in public space] of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels.

In addition, she has created in 2021 the honorary flag for Bouboulina’s Museum in Spetses, within the context of the 200-year anniversary of the Greek Revolution of 1821. 

Athina Ioannou is now the recipient of ISCP 2023 International Program (ISCP) Brooklyn, New York

Athina Ioannou in conversation with Artworks-fellows 25.10.19. On Friday October 25th Artworks fellows visited ARCH. Our Fellows 2019 had the chance to meet in person Athina Ioannou, artist in residence at ARCH and  discuss with her about the preparation of the exhibition Floating Gestures, the outcome of her 2-month stay at ARCH. Athina also talked about her artistic practice and her work until now. Atalanti Martinou, Founder and Director, informed our Fellows about the general scope of ARCH, its future activities and programme.
